Family friendly house tour

Here's another fun, bright, and colorful home that's family friendly. They did a ton of diy's and thrift shopping, but you would never know!

This is an ikea kitchen but with carrera marble countertops and glass mosiac backsplash.

They simply wallpapered a section of their wall and framed it with crown-molding to create a focal point.

The chair was a thrift store find, she refurbished and reupholstered.

Those are outdoor tables and $50 craigslist chairs with reupholstered cushions.

Children's artwork featured in the stairway gallery, so bright and colorful.

Meet some DIY rockstars

So when I do a DIY in my home I honestly have no idea whether it will work or not! Well, remember my zebra console table?

Heather used my console table tutorial to achieve her fabulously glam nail head console table:
I love how she styled it with the art underneath and the parrot piece on top, so creative! Go Heather, what a rockstar! Check out her stylish blog House of Movi for more of her vintage/glam style.

and the roman shades in my dining room?

Lauren of gathering moss used my roman shade tutorial to achieve a roman shade in her bathroom:

That honeycomb floor and perfect paint color on those walls make for such a serene beautiful bathroom and the shade is the cherry on top. Well done, Lauren! Be sure to visit gathering moss to catch more of Lauren's home and diy's.

You gals truly made my day with your mad DIY skills!

Faith revelation plus a broken heart

Finishing up our Bible study on the life of David, I've come away with an amazing truth: Faith should not be based on what God does or doesn't do, but on who He is. Wow. This is pretty life-changing for me and the way I look at faith.
In light of faith and hope, I'm devastated along with everyone else watching all the footage from Japan. Living there for 4 years, I can tell you first hand how beautiful, hospitable, warm and loving are the people of Japan.
Since most of us can't go, the most we can do, which feels like a drop in the bucket is pray and give. Here's two organizations that are on the front lines:

Weekend review

It was a fun and full weekend. We kicked it off with these colossal donuts from shoppers grocery store, I assure you rainbow sprinkles and chocolate really are the best way to start anything.

Next was what I call our fake spring photo shoot, fake due to the 47 degree temperature that morning and the fact the gideon's teeth were chattering! We'll try again next weekend, can you tell I'm slightly anxious for warmth and blooming flowers?

The sun did come out the next day and I actually took a cat nap on the deck basking in the warmth! Then for the grand finale of the weekend... our Sunday Mardi gras style bible study complete with jambalaya, muffalettas, and cafe du monde coffee finished with bourbon bread pudding. What a weekend! Hope yours was as tasty!

Meet my $45 rocking chair

I found this rocking chair at a antique store for $45 bucks, score! I fell in love with the cane back and rad red color. Finished it off by" reupholstering" the seat made from tablecloth fabric; never underestimate great fabric found in tablecloths, curtains, and sheets! This newly furbished chair is the perfect addition for the guest room/nursery.
(pardon the funny-lit pictures, I took these at night)

What I'm giving up

image here

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. I'll be giving up shopping, which is my ongoing vice. I"m looking forward to the next 40 days in preparation of Easter and reminding myself in our consumer-driven culture that I can say NO because I have a deeper YES!

Spring break packing list

In attempts to streamline my wardrobe and make things more simplistic, my goal is to mix, match, and coordinate in efforts to reduce and reuse. So my packing list for spring break ( Ft.worth Texas!) is a small coordinating list that takes the guess-work out of dressing!

Favorites friday: Etsy finds

Camping out on the couch with my sick kiddo defintely leads to excessive online shopping, particularly on etsy! Look what I found:

Gearing up for our spring photoshoots and this garland will be perfect via vintagelove

Got one of these in a bow-tie form for G, super adorable via butteredtoast

Just ordered business cards from sweetprintshop can't wait to show you!

And now I'm officially banning myself from etsy, sheesh!!!!

Other happy finds:

A heavenly maternity shoot

Gingham plus spring flowers, so happy together.

This shimmery shirt and this lipstick are pretty.

Darling animal prints.

I'm starting to smell spring, its right around the corner, Praise God; plus the weekend is here.

"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland."

Lessons in photography

I'm still a total novice, but thought I'd share some things I've learned along the way about my beloved camera! I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II and its total love. I did start with a nikon D60 and can say nikons are equally amazing. Honestly I've learned the most about my DSLR from blogs and articles, but I've actively sought how work the settings in my favor to ensure the best shots. I shoot fully manual  meaning I set my own aperture, shutter speed, and iso. These three create a love triangle that when mastered can make beautiful music! Lighting is everything, aim to shoot in the golden hour of sunrise and sunset. So whenever I catch Gideon in a good mood or distracted enough by the chopped tree down in our backyard, I take advantage!
Shooting kids can be tricky, its most effective if you give them sort of activity so they don't notice the camera!
By the way, I shot these pictures almost midday, which is very harsh and bright light, not the best time.

Look for texture, its really amazing on camera.

I couldn't get over the beauty of sap on the tree, such a simple thing makes for a pretty picture.

Think about angles and how many ways you can look differently at something.

The fail-safe smile is always a sure thing.

Momtog, I heart faces, and inspire me baby are some of my favorite photography sites!

Kids incorporated rooms

I really appreciate when designers incorporate children in a room. Its so tricky having nice things with little ones running around. Just last week Gideon ripped a section of wallpaper right off the wall, colored on my lucite coffee table, and spilled chocolate milk on the rug! But my husband and I don't want our home taken over by fisher price toys, that's why he has his own room; where toys can live. These images are a nice balance of incorporating children but still claiming the house as your own!

That kids table and chairs are identical to the one at ikea!

Love the ring toss thrown in there as a part of the decor!

The kiddo still feels comfortable playing in a pretty grown-up room.

Blow that horn

Ready for a funny story? A couple sundays ago at church, our Pastor was teaching Joshua and the battle of Jericho. Mid sermon he demonstrated how the Israelites blew the shofar horn prior to the wall falling, proclaiming their victory even before the wall fell. Pretty amazing. At the end of the service, I'm gathering my things and greeting people and I notice my missing husband. Then I hear it, a pretty loud blast of that horn! Yep, his trumpet playing days may be over, but he was chomping at the bit to blow that shofar! So our Pastor invited him to blast it in all three services the following week and it was pretty thrilling, especially imagining what kind of freedom and deliverance it was meant to declare!

"When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed..."
Joshua 6:20

The bump in a fancy dress

The weekend kicked off with us locked out of our house, nothing like a quick run to home depot for a screw driver to pick locks! Then the "dining out" which was our makeup for the cancelled ball was a great time, rowdy as to be expected with marines and their antics! Lots of toasting, roasting, and even a dance off, yep they are crazy. Then Sunday was the highlight as my husband was able to blow a horn at church, more on that tomorrow!

By the way, I tried so many updo's and failed miserably, thus the exhausted hair look! When your pregnant your just happy to fit in a dress!
